This procedure measures the amount of moisture within a sample by determining the weight loss in the sample after heating above 100°C.
A known sample weight is placed into a pre-weighed aluminum weigh pan and is dried in a vacuum oven at a temperature above 100°C for at least 1 hour. The specimen is then quickly removed from the vacuum oven, allowed to cool in a dessicator and weighed to determine the amount of water lost during the drying process.
